Your Why Leads to Your Purpose

Your Why – Your Purpose

Your Why

Your work/life balance starts with your WHY. And knowing your WHY for work and life brings focus to your passion and ultimately your purpose. Planning around your WHY brings you closer to your goals. All part of your brand.

Career Counselor, Richard Ledier, created a formula that helps people decide the next step in their work/life, and learning what you re good at, what you are about, and what is important to you is one way to explore your best options.

G+P+V=P

Mr. Ledier’s formula G+P+V=P helps you define your calling.

Time to “Write to your Success” and break out your journal.  You’ll want to write the answers to these questions.

  • Starting with ‘G’ – gifts you’ll find your strengths.
  • What are you good at?

Spend time writing about your achievements. At the least, make a list of your achievements in the past 5 years.

Are you a planner, seamstress, or chef? Is your focus on pottery, or woodworking? Are you a teacher, public speaker, or coach? What make you get out of bed every morning?

  • P = Passion.
  • What do you care about?
  • Are there issues or communities in the world that resonate with you more than others?
  • Are you a victim of a crime and have a passion to change the world because of the event?

“Perhaps your challenge isn’t finding a better project or a better boss. Perhaps you need to get in touch with what it means to feel passionate. People with passion look for ways to make things happen.”

                                                            Seth Goden

Is that you?

  • V = Values   Values for your lifestyle and personality

If you competed the exercises in our previous post on Values, your list will lead you to completing Leifer’s formula. If not, go back to “Your Values” post and write about what is important to you.

Outcome           Gifts+Passion+Values = Purpose

Purpose

If purpose is the result of mixing your gifts with your values and passion, you can see why Catherine Pulsipher is quoted as saying –

“We all have a purpose in life, and when you find yours, you will recognize it.”

When you write about your focus, your gifts, what you care about, and your values, you’ll know yourself in a completely different way. And you’ll develop your purpose.

Your purpose will span between your work and life, and you’ll be comfortable and confident answering these three questions:

  • What change do you want to make in the world and why?
  • What inspires you and why?
  • When do you feel fulfilled?

This leads you to thinking about your Values and Principles. How are they different?  Be sure you’ve answered the questions in this post, so you’ll be ready to move forward.
